Hello! I’m Kate Mathews and I’ve set up Rooted Gardening York because…well, I love gardening! And I believe gardens and outside spaces have the power to have an enormous, positive impact on the lives of individuals and families, as well as local wildlife and ultimately our amazing planet.

Before setting up Rooted and I enjoyed 20 years working in PR, comms and marketing agencies. I was lucky enough to work with a huge range of clients from tech and travel companies to global healthcare businesses, but somehow the world told me not to stay behind a desk for the next 20 years. And so Rooted was born!

It was born out of a passion for gardening and the outdoors and the wish to make real, tangible differences to people’s lives. A tangible difference – not necessarily huge – but 100% real. And that to me is what gardens can do. They don’t need to be ‘perfect’ and straight out the pages of a glossy mag to do this – they just need to be loved, tended and as brilliantly individual as the people who own them.

Away from gardening, I live with my husband, young daughter and our elderly cat Skiddles (yes, her fur is a nightmare!). I love the Yorkshire countryside, running (running is a motion not a speed!), good food, arty things and the theatre. I’m also a Trustee for Heartwood Learning Trust, which runs 14 schools in York and East Yorkshire, because community is important to me and I believe all children should have access to education which is right for them, and helps them thrive.
